UOW’s reputation for teaching and learning excellence reaffirmed

The University of Wollongong’s (UOW) standing among Australia’s leading teaching and learning institutions has been reaffirmed, receiving five stars and ranking ahead of all other NSW universities in several categories in the 2019 Good Universities Guide.

The annual publication ranked UOW first in NSW and gave five-star ratings for the categories of: Student Retention, Skills Development, Learning Resources and Learner Engagement.

UOW’s ranking as equal first in NSW for Student Retention—a position shared by NUW Alliance partner UNSW—means UOW has done better than all other NSW universities at retaining students at a higher rate than the national average.

The rankings reveal UOW students are more satisfied with the skills they develop during their studies, the learning resources they are provided and how engaged they and their fellow students are in learning than at any other NSW university.

UOW also received the highest possible rating of five stars for other critical categories of Staff Qualifications, Student Support and its Overall Student Experience.

These ratings indicate UOW has a high proportion of academic staff with masters or doctoral degrees and high levels of student satisfaction with the support they receive from the institution and the overall quality of their experience while studying at UOW.

The University also achieved outstanding ratings in the specific subject areas of Creative Arts, Health Services and Support, Agriculture and Environmental Studies, Business and Management, and outstanding graduate outcome results in Engineering and Medicine.
Creative arts students at UOW are more satisfied with their skills development than at all other Australian universities and the most satisfied in NSW for Teaching Quality, Student Support and Learner Engagement.

Students studying programs in the Health Services and Support category at UOW report Australia’s highest satisfaction with their Learning Resources and are NSW’s most satisfied for Teaching Quality, Learner Engagement, and Overall Experience. UOW’s Business and Management students are NSW’s most satisfied with their Learning Resources and Skills Development.

UOW’s Engineering students boast NSW’s best full-time employment rate and median salary after graduation, while its Medicine graduates achieved a nation-leading 100% full-time employment rate and NSW’s best median salary.

UOW Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Wellings CBE, said this year’s impressive results were yet another confirmation of UOW’s commitment to its students.

These results come just two months after UOW received international recognition for its institution-wide commitment to the pursuit of teaching and learning excellence at the 2018 Global Teaching Excellence Awards.
