The Australian Institute for Innovative Materials houses two flagship research teams –
- The Intelligent Polymer Research Institute and
- The Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials
Bringing together chemists, engineers, physicists, biologists and materials scientists under one roof (!).
The building sets a new standard for multi-functional materials research facilities in Australia as it boasts:
- 9,900m2 of laboratory and office space
- world-class battery and charger testing facilities
- biofabrication facilities
- a dedicated processes and devices development workshop; and
- a clean room
The facility is the first multi-functional materials facility in Australia that is equipped to undertake particular ground-breaking research and to develop the new production processes, devices and prototypes that will enable those breakthroughs to be scaled-up for commercial application.
AIIM is home to the materials node of the Australian National Fabrication Facility, linking eight university-based nodes bringing together, with strengths in the fabrication of both hard and soft materials, particularly nano-organic and inorganic electronic materials.
Extensive facilities for fabricating thin films and devices, such as organic electronic diodes and transistors, with applications in energy generation, energy storage, display, biosensor and photonics technology areas are available.
The facility has a UHV instrument that consists of a deposition chamber involving three RF magnetron sources and the Electron Beam Evaporation (EBE) source, and an analytical chamber including Auger spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and Ultraviolet Photoelectron Spectroscopy (UPS).
